What Is Form M?
Form M is an electronic import declaration used in Nigeria’s import process.
It provides the Nigerian authorities with information about a proposed import transaction before the goods are shipped into Nigeria.
The application contains important information about the importer, exporter, commodity, quantity, value, country of origin and other details relevant to the proposed importation.
Form M is therefore an important part of Nigeria’s import documentation and trade-control framework.
However, Form M should not be viewed in isolation.
Depending on the nature of the goods, an import transaction may also involve customs documentation, insurance, permits, product-specific regulatory requirements, valuation procedures and other applicable government requirements.

The 5 Steps to Obtain Form M
Step 1: Prepare Your Import Documents
The process begins with proper preparation.
The importer provides the necessary transaction documents, which may include the Proforma Invoice, insurance documentation and applicable regulatory certificates or permits.
Depending on the product, additional regulatory requirements may apply. For example, certain products may fall under the regulatory oversight of agencies such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) or the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Before submitting your application, ensure that the information across your documents is consistent.
Do not wait until the cargo is already in transit to discover a documentation problem.
Step 2: Submit the Form M Through Your Authorized Dealer Bank
The importer initiates the Form M application through the appropriate Authorised Dealer Bank.
The application and supporting documentation are submitted electronically through Nigeria’s applicable trade documentation framework.
This stage requires accuracy because the information declared on Form M can subsequently be relevant to the customs clearance and assessment process.
Step 3: Customs Review and Validation
Once submitted, the Form M is made available for review by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
